Charles B. Vail College Fellows Program

Charles B. Vail College Fellows Program

Lab scene

The Vail College Fellows Program brings together faculty and students for shared research and teaching projects, offering opportunities rarely found in an undergraduate classroom. Many of the projects lead to scholarly presentations and joint publications. Some students receive academic credit for their projects; others receive a tuition stipend. So far, since the program's start in 1993, some 291 students have taken on Vail projects and more than $206,000 in Vail scholarship money has been awarded.

The projects are truly collaborative. Vail College Fellows don't just act as research assistants, they work with a faculty member to help design a shared project. Interested faculty members and students propose a project by applying to the Provost's office in early April. The Faculty Development Committee reviews proposals and makes the final decisions.

There are two branches of the program:

  • Teaching Fellows and Research Fellows receive academic credit and register for the course labeled 498 or 493 in the appropriate discipline
  • Distinguished Teaching and Research Fellows receive a $1,000 tuition scholarship.
  • All participants must have at least a 3.0-grade point average.

More information is available in the Course Catalog under Individualized Study, Undergraduate Research.
